We spotted test mules of the diesel variants of the Volkswagen Ameo testing in Mahrashtra. The sub-four metre compact sedan from the German manufacturer was launched only with the petrol engine option with the updates to the 1.5-litre diesel unit still under development.
Volkswagen has been working on tweaking the new 1.5-litre diesel mill they had introduced in 2014 and was expected to hit the road by October this year. It seems that the new engine has graduated from work-benches and is being tested real-time. The new 1.5-litre mill will generate 108bhp of power, five more than its predecessor and 230Nm of torque. Even the 89bhp setup of the 1.5-litre mill is expected to churn out more power.
Volkswagen has built the Ameo specifically for the Indian market and the Polo-based compact sedan has already expressed its intent with an aggressive price tag for its petrol variants. The diesel is expected to be offered with the standard five-speed manual gearbox along with the seven-speed DSG option for the Ameo.
