Some Nexus 6P Users Reporting Battery Failure Issue on Android 7.0 Nougat

Some Nexus 6P users are reporting what is being termed a battery failure after updating to Android 7.0 Nougat. Neither Google nor Huawei have yet acknowledged the issue, which appears to be software related.

A Reddit thread started by YouTuber TheRedy Tedy demonstrates an issue where the Nexus 6P has 53 percent charge, but after 3 photos are taken from the camera app the phone shuts down. It can only be turned back on by plugging the power cable in, and holding the power key after the battery charging symbol is displayed.

Other users on the Reddit thread also speak about inexplicably fast battery drain, which for some seems to resolve itself for a while after a reboot. While a few Redditors reported battery drain at various percentages of available charge, several others had consistent shutdowns after hitting 25 percent charge.

The issue certainly appears to be related to the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Nexus 6P, and TheRedy Tedy’s phone was running the October Android Security Patch with build NBD90X. One of the main selling points of Nexus devices is the ‘immediate’ availability of Android updates, however, things don’t always go as planned.

The Android 7.0 Nougat update has not been immune to a few bugs and issues, with Nexus 5X users reporting random reboots in September, while Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 LTE users had to wait a few months before they got their update to Nougat.

With such issues occurring for what are Google-supported handsets, it will be interesting to see what the search giant will manage with its Pixel series of smartphones – the first smartphones to be ‘Made by Google’.
