New Delhi:
Gaurav Gill is eyeing a top-five finish at the Rally of Turkey that starts next week. Gill, the first Arjuna Award winner from motorsports, returns to the FIA World Rally Championships 2 circuit with a new car, a Ford Fiesta R5, developed by M-Sport.
Despite not having had a chance to do any sort of timing in his new car, Gill is optimistic that practice stints before the rally will be enough for him to do well in Turkey. “No, I haven’t done any testing on the car yet. Monday will be the first time I will get to drive it. We have an official practice on Thursday where I will get to drive it for 150-200km,” Gill said. “It is not ideal but I will have to get the best out of this situation.”
The rally of Turkey, which will cover over 980km, will be a huge of endurance as the cabin temperature inside the car is expected to be 55-60° C. The gravel splashed with boulder rocks will be another challenge.
“I have been spending time in sauna wearing my overalls and been running in the afternoon to get used to that heat,” he said. “I am my biggest critic so anything less than a top-five finish will be a disappointment.” — TNS
