MIUI 7.2.8 China ROM Based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow Starts Rolling Out

Xiaomi has finally released a stable Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based MIUI software update for select smartphones. The rollout, which is currently underway only in China, is available for Xiaomi Mi 3 and Mi 4 smartphones, the company announced on a blog post. Specifically, this is the China ROM for the handsets, and the global ROM (which also features Google Mobile Services) is expected to be released soon.

The MIUI 7.2.8.0 stable China ROM began being seeded to the Xiaomi Mi 3, Xiaomi Mi 4 smartphones in China last week. The update is expected soon for other devices. Do note that if you’ve a global variant of either of the aforementioned handsets, you are not recommended to use this ROM. The rollout of the China ROM suggests that Xiaomi may soon make available Android Marshmallow-based MIUI 7.2 update elsewhere as well. To recall, Xiaomi released MIUI 7.1 global stable build for a range of devices in January 2016. The update, depending on the device, offered either Android Lollipop features, or Android KitKat features.

Alongside a range of features, MIUI 7.2.8.0 also offers a bunch of software fixes. For instance, the company says that an issue that removed Cortana from the device and prevented it from being installed again, has been resolved. Similarly, an issue with customised themes has been fixed.

Since it’s a rollout for Chinese users, the MIUI 7.2.8.0 build doesn’t offer Gmail, Google Now, or any other apps or services that are part of Google Mobile Services (GMS). Fret not, that wouldn’t be the case for the global MIUI 7.2 ROM based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

As seen earlier, Android 6.0-based MIUI build comes with a number of features including an immersive status bar, camera improvements, improved heat and battery regulation, improved package installer, simplified menu, improved app permission, and performance improvements.
