Mitsubishi eX Concept Previews Future All-Electric Outlander Sport


Mitsubishi eX Concept, 2015 Tokyo Motor ShowMitsubishi has been showing off a series of compact crossover concept vehicles in recent years that are meant to preview a successor to the Outlander Sport debuting at next month’s 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show. A new concept has just been revealed at this week’s Tokyo Motor Show, and this one comes with an all-electric powertrain as opposed to the plug-in hybrid setup of previous versions.

The name of the latest concept is eX, and the body is more coupe-like than before, suggesting that Mitsubishi’s Outlander Sport successor may come in more than one bodystyle. The front of the eX features Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield motif and at the rear there’s a split C-pillar.

For the cabin, the use of a framed structure covered with soft-touch material for the dashboard and other major elements of the front compartment helps to create a lightweight, minimalist look. The concept also employs an augmented reality windshield as well as a large screen located in the center of the instrument housing to give information to the driver.

Drive comes from a pair of electric motors, one at each axle, and peak output of the system is 187 horsepower. The battery is a 45-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion unit and on a single charge the eX should be able to cover between 200 and 250 miles.

The twin-motor system incorporates Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) integrated vehicle dynamics control system which uses braking to control the front wheels and a transfer mechanism Active Yaw Control (AYC) that varies torque split between the rear wheels. The driver has three modes to choose from: Auto, Gravel and Snow.

The eX also previews a variety of automated (and semi-automated running) driving technologies which are very compatible with EVs. These include an autonomous parking system and a highway driving assistant. In addition, an obstacle avoidance system uses cameras and radar mounted to the vehicle and communications with vehicles in the vicinity, to detect any obstacles for the car to avoid.
