TALLAHASSEE, FL (WFLA) – An 81-year-old man left San Diego on a bicycle to see if he could make it to Florida and to raise money on the way. His wife followed him in an RV.
Tom Cawood and his wife left California six weeks ago. The couple is nearing the end of their 3,000-mile journey. They are paying all the costs of the trip but they are also raising money for veterans, cancer survivors, and the North American Mission board.
Tom Cawood was told he wouldn’t live past 20. At 59, he was told he’d never ride a bike again. Now at 81, he is bicycling across the country.
“There were times we thought this would never occur. We’re so short in the completion of our trip,” Cawood said. “Feels great. It was much more difficult than I thought it would be. But yet, very gratifying to know we’re still able to do that. I have a philosophy: Life is like water skiing. If you go down, you go down.”
