HTC to Make Windows Mobile 10 Phone, First Smartwatch to Launch Soon: Reports

HTC, which launched the HTC One (M8) Windows Phone-powered flagship smartphone in 2014, may be prepping for another smartphone embracing Microsoft’s mobile operating system. According to a job posting on Microsoft’s website, HTC is working on a Windows 10 Mobile smartphone. Also, it appears the Taiwanese company is finally ready to launch its first smartwatch.

A job posting listed on the Redmond, Washington-based company’s website hints at an HTC-made Windows 10 Mobile smartphone. The posting, in which Microsoft recognises HTC as one of its top third party phone manufacturers, says it is looking for personnel who can lead “all aspects of sales and business development interaction with HTC.”

Windows 10 Mobile is Microsoft’s newest mobile operating system. Currently, it is only available for select handsets such as the Lumia 950 and the Lumia 650, with many other Lumia smartphones including the Lumia 520 said to receive the software update in the coming weeks.

Separately, according to tipster Evan Blass (aka @evleaks), HTC plans to launch its first smartwatch soon. The long-rumoured smartwatch will go on sale before April, he said. A lot of ink has been spilled on the unannounced product. The wearable gadget was once spotted on a company’s video. Last year, explaining why the company hasn’t launched the smartwatch yet, HTC CEO Peter Chou said, “We try to be very careful instead of just putting out whatever, so we keep working on it.”

A report from December 2015 claimed that the smartwatch will be called the HTC One Smartwatch and will be launched in February. The Taiwanese company is expected to launch the HTC One M10 at the Mobile World Congress next week. The company could utilise the same event to unveil its smartwatch as well. Only time will tell. To recall, HTC had also delayed the launch of its first wearable – the HTC Grip fitness tracker – to early 2016.
