German luxury carmaker Audi is all set to bring in electric vehicles for the Indian market as early as 2019-2020, but stressed on the need for proper infrastructure in the country. A top official from the company, while talking to carandbike.com said they are closely monitoring the electric vehicle situation in the country and will start introducing EVs as soon as the government announces a proper roadmap. Audi launched the all new Q5 SUV in the country at a starting price of ₹ 57.25 lakh, and is looking to bring in exciting new products for India this year.

Rahil Ansari, Head, Audi India said, “On the introduction of electric vehicles in India, we are very excited with the government’s plan. While we are launching three new electric vehicles until 2020 for the global market, we are ready to bring in electric vehicles in the country as soon as the government provides with a proper road-map.”

But, Ansari stressed on the need of proper infrastructure for the electric segment in the country, before the Centre plans to introduce EVs.

Ansari said, “It all depends on how far the infrastructure in the country has developed. If the infrastructure is ready, we will make a decision of launching in India otherwise we will have to wait. It is not the numbers of years that are left to do the job; but the readiness to get that job done.”

Globally by 2025, Audi is looking to have 30 per cent of its sales to come from electric vehicles. It plans to introduce one EV model each year starting 2020.

The company sold a total of 7,876 units in the Indian market last year, logging a 2 per cent growth over 2016. Audi has sold over 16 lakh units of the model globally till date.
