Chrysler recalls 112,001 cars over airbag concerns

Chrysler has issued a recall in the United States for their minivans and crossovers that were manufactured in 2007 and 2008 with a problem in the cars’ airbag control unit.

Chrysler added that an estimated 112,001 units have been identified and the models include the 2009 Dodge Journey, 2008-2009 built Dodge Grand Caravan, and 2008-2009 built Chrysler Town and Country. The 2009 Volkswagen Routan that was manufactured by Chrysler is also being recalled by FCA.

Chrysler admitted that corrosion in the airbag control unit could prevent the airbags from deploying in the event of a crash, or could also deploy prematurely. As of now seven minor injuries have been reported related to this issue but Chrysler persisted that none of the affected vehicles are equipped with ammonium-nitrate inflators.

Though Chrysler has not yet provided a notification schedule, owners may contact Chrysler customer service for further information. Dealerships have been instructed to replace the airbag control unit at no cost to the owner.
