NEW DELHI: While buying a used car or any other vehicle, you can now check its genuineness simply by sending an SMS to 7738299899 from your mobile phone. Similarly, the enforcement authorities can also verify the holders of driving licences, considered as proof of address in many cases, by sending the number to 8790499899.
The road transport ministry has also developed a web-enabled application which will get you more details about vehicles and drivers.
Giving details of the initiative, joint secretary (transport) Abhay Damle said, “These interventions will facilitate people who take vehicles on hire to check the credentials of drivers and the vehicle as well. This service will also help the enforcement agencies to detect any fake documents.”
National Informatics Centre (NIC) developed this SMS and web-based applications after the transport ministry received several queries about genuineness of vehicles and also drivers. He added people can get “limited” details free of cost such as chassis and engine numbers, place of registration and validity in the case of RCs. Similarly, for DLs the limited details include the bearer’s name, validity and place of issue.
An NIC official said that for simple details about registration certificates (RCs), one just needs to send an SMS ‘VAHAN’ with vehicle RC no to 7738299899. The SMS sender will get a reply with the details. Similarly to check the status of a driving licence, the sender needs to type SARDL and send it to 8790499899.
People can also get more details by logging on to two websites – and for vehicle details and for holders of driving licence.
