The new-generation 2019 Jeep Wrangler has been a long time coming and is being touted as more refined machine that can be driven every day. Yet, Jeep insists it hasn’t sacrificed any of its mud-plugging off-road ability and is still capable of completing the challenging Rubicon trail.

That’s the word according to Guillaume Drelon, Jeep Australia’s brand boss, who joined us in the New Car Vault to talk about all things JL Jeep Wrangler.

Despite retaining its signature design, the new-generation 2019 Jeep Wrangler is based on an all-new platform, gets a new turbo-diesel engine, an upgraded interior and improved equipment levels.

Local testing in the Aussie outback was undertaken in 2018 for the model – a first for the Wrangler.

The new Jeep Wrangler is offered with a 3.6-litre petrol V6 (209kW/347kW) and a new 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine (146kW/347Nm). It can now tow up to 2500kg.

Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and feature engine-idle stop technology to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Two and four-door Wrangler models will be available Down Under and all models are based on a rugged ladder-chassis frame, with live axles and coil suspension at both ends.

Bonnet latches and full-sized spare wheel on the tailgate return, and Drelon explains that the Wrangler is still one of the only convertible 4x4s available today, featuring removing roof panels. He claims using the toolkit supplied with the car it is possible for owners to take the doors off and fold the windscreen down!

Standard features across the 2019 Jeep Wrangler range include full-time 4×4 system with low range, alloy wheels, touchscreen infotainment systems with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, reversing camera and rear parking sensors and keyless ignition.

The all-new JL Jeep Wrangler will also get a spin-off dual-cab ute, the Jeep Gladiator, which will be coming to Australia in 2020.

How much does the 2019 Jeep Wrangler cost?
>> Wrangler Sport S two-door petrol — $48,950
>> Wrangler Sport S four-door petrol — $53,450
>> Wrangler Overland two-door petrol — $58,450
>> Wrangler Overland four-door petrol — $62,950
>> Wrangler Rubicon four-door petrol — $63,950
>> Wrangler Rubicon four-door turbo-diesel — $68,950
