With fuel prices shooting through the roof, every car maker is looking to launch the most fuel efficient cars possible, both in petrol and diesel trim. Volkswagen has already bumped up the fuel efficiency of the Polo hatchback by downsizing the car’s petrol engine to a 1 litre-3 cylinder unit, from a 1.2 liter-3 cylinder unit. Now the same has been done with the Ameo as well. It’s 1.2-litre petrol motor has been replaced by a 1 litre unit. The engine swap sees the Ameo gain fuel efficiency marginally, from about 17.83 Kmpl on the 1.2 liter motor to over 18 Kmpl.
What buyers won’t be happy with is the significant drop in torque numbers, from 110 Nm on the larger engine to just 95 Nm on the smaller motor. Peak power has gone up marginally, from 74 Bhp to 76 Bhp. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard. There’s no automatic option on offer with the new engine.
Along with launching the new motor on the Ameo, Volkswagen has also introduced a new, special edition model called the Pace. The Ameo Pace is based on the Comfortline trim, but gets additional features such as faux carbon-fiber stickered boot lid spoiler, blacked out wing mirrors, alloy wheels and cruise control.
The Ameo Pace is priced at Rs. 6.10 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi. The compact sedan is also sold with a turbocharged diesel engine. The motor is a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder unit with 108 Bhp of peak power and 250 Nm of peak torque. There are two gearbox options with the diesel model – a 5-speed manual and a 7-speed twin clutch automatic.
The Ameo DSG is the one of the fastest compact sedans in the country, and goes head to head with the Ford Figo Aspire Diesel in terms of performance on tap. Prices of the diesel model start from Rs. 6.5 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi.
