10th – Honda CR-V
Years: 2006-12 Budget from: £2500 Our favourite: 2.2 i-CDTi ES
The Honda CR-V is a large SUV that places a big emphasis on practicality, making it ideal for families on the move. As little as £2500 will get you an early diesel-engined model, but we’d aim to spend around £5000 on a 2.2-litre ES model from 2009. Every CR-V gets four-wheel drive as standard, and our recommended ES model comes with climate and cruise controls and parking sensors.

9th – Volkswagen Polo
Years: 2009-present Budget from: £3000 Our favourite: 1.4 Match
The Polo hatchback may be small, but it’s still classy inside, thanks to sharing many of its fixtures and fittings with the larger Volkswagen Golf. It’s also fairly practical, offering a decent boot and more leg room for rear passengers than most of its rivals. Go for the 1.4-litre petrol engine if you’ll mainly be driving in town, or the 1.4-litre diesel if you’ll be travelling further afield more often.

8th – Volkswagen Golf
Years: 2013-present Budget from: £6000 Our favourite: 1.4 TSI 125 Match 5dr
The current Golf has just been updated, which means there are plenty of pre-facelift models about to find their way onto the used market. This seventh-generation Golf has been well received, too, thanks to its upmarket interior, comfort and fairly frugal engines. As with the Polo above, the 1.4-litre petrol is your best choice, especially if you won’t be doing enough miles to justify a diesel. Our recommended Match special edition model comes with adaptive cruise control, automatic lights and wipers, a DAB radio and Bluetooth.
