The Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South is warning consumers about a Memphis used-car dealer accused of selling salvage vehicles without properly noting on the automobile title that they had been salvaged.
The BBB received seven complaints in the last seven months about Nationwide Collision Service and Sales, 710 N. Parkway. The company failed to respond and the BBB has issued a failing “F” rating for the dealer.
In some cases, salvage vehicles were advertised on Craigslist as having “clean” titles, according to the BBB. The BBB gave examples of buyers who paid $2,300 and $4,000 for salvage cars that they were unable to register and obtain car tags to drive.
The business could not be reached for comment.
In Tennessee, about 6,000 vehicles a month are so damaged that they are considered a total loss, or lost more than 75 percent of their retail value. If less than 10 years old, a salvage or non-repairable certificate can be obtained, according to the state Department of Revenue.
About 1,700 salvage vehicles each month are rebuilt in the state, according to the agency. A passenger motor vehicle that has been issued a salvage title cannot be registered for road use unless it has been issued a title with a “rebuilt vehicle” brand.
