The upcoming festive season is a popular time to buy new cars, especially with carmakers launching a variety of new and facelifted models in the last few months. From entry-level models to a long-range electric vehicle, there is plenty to choose from. Here are the top 10 new cars of 2019 that can be on your Diwali shopping list:
1) Renault Kwid 2019
Price: Rs 2.83 lakh to Rs 4.92 lakh
The entry-level Renault offering just received a facelift, which should refresh some interest in the car. It has plenty of features and the top variant looks more premium than its price suggests.
The Kwid gets features such as LED DRLs, rear parking camera, dual front airbags, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and rear fold-out armrest. In terms of engine, it offers a choice between 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre petrol engines with a 5-speed manual while the latter gets an AMT option too.
2) Maruti S-Presso
Price: Rs 3.69 lakh to Rs 4.91 lakh
Maruti has only just launched an entry-level model with SUV-like proportions and styling, like the Kwid. The S-Presso does come across as a budget offering from the outside but the interior styling brings something new to this segment.
In terms of features, it also gets dual front airbags, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, steering-mounted audio controls and more. The S-Presso is only available with a BS6-compliant 1.0-litre petrol engine that gets a 5-speed manual and an AMT as well. Like the Kwid, it is aimed at a younger/ first-time buyer.
3) Renault Triber
Price: Rs 4.95 lakh to Rs 6.49 lakh
Renault has introduced a brand new offering this year called the Triber. It’s a sub-4m MPV crossover and is the first to offer a modular seating layout in this segment and price range. The Triber gets removable third-row seats while the middle row seats can be adjusted and folded too.
It is a versatile offering and offers an impressive 625 litres of boot space when being used as a 5-seater. Renault has equipped it with AC vents for each row, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and up to four airbags in its higher trim. The Triber is powered by the same 1.0-litre petrol engine as the Kwid in a slightly higher state of tune but is only available with a 5-speed manual at the moment.
4) Hyundai Grand i10 Nios
Price: Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7.99 lakh
This isn’t a brand new model but a new generation of the Grand i10. It features the latest Hyundai styling, it’s bigger, and still feature-packed. The Nios is available with a choice of 1.2-litre engines, both petrol and diesel. The petrol version is BS6 compliant while diesel cars will be updated by April 2020.
Hyundai has equipped it with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which is now integrated into the instrument cluster panel for a more premium look. The Grand i10 Nios also gets rear parking camera, dual front airbags, wireless charging, and rear AC vents.
5) Hyundai Venue
Price: Rs 6.5 lakh to Rs 11 lakh
The new model from Hyundai this year has been the Venue—the Korean carmaker’s entrance to the sub-4m SUV. It brings in a fresh style and technology to the segment. The Venue was the first Hyundai model to be equipped with Blue Link connected car technology and remote functionality.
It also got the new 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It debuted the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine along with the usual 1.2-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel engine offerings. The turbo-petrol gets the choice of a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT auto.
6) Maruti Suzuki XL6
Price: Rs 9.8 lakh to Rs 11.46 lakh
Maruti added a new model to its Nexa portfolio of relatively premium offerings with the XL6. It is essentially a 6-seater version of the already popular Ertiga MPV that has been redressed for a more upmarket appeal. The XL6 gets leather upholstery, second row captain seats with the recline function and features such as auto AC, cruise control and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system.
Maruti offers the XL6 with a BS6-compliant 1.5-litre petrol engine with the Smart Hybrid technology, paired to a 5-speed manual with the option of automatic transmission too.
7) Kia Seltos
Price: Rs 9.69 lakh to Rs 16.99 lakh
From new models to a new brand altogether, the Seltos compact SUV is Kia’s debut product in India. More than a year after the carmaker made its public entry in India at the 2018 Auto Expo, the Seltos made its global debut right here. It is poised as a premium offering, like the Hyundai Creta, and comes packed with features and technology previously unheard of in the segment.
The Seltos comes with Kia’s UVO Connect connected car tech, 360-degree parking camera, front parking sensors, ventilated front seats, air purifier and many more comforts and conveniences. It is the only model in its segment to offer BS6-compliant engine options: 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines, and a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine. Each engine comes with a 6-speed manual and its type of automatic transmission option.
8) MG Hector
Price: Rs 12.48 lakh to Rs 17.28 lakh
MG (Morris Garages) is the other automotive brand to enter India in 2019, before Kia, which also debuted with an SUV, the Hector. It is a mid-size 5-seater SUV and its aggressive pricing brings it into contention with the smaller Kia Seltos as well. The Hector offers a lot for the price and the top-spec variant features a panoramic sunroof, 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system with eSIM-enabled connected car technology for voice commands and remote functions.
The Hector is available with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol and a 2.0-litre diesel engine, both mated to a 6-speed manual. MG offers a mild-hybrid version of the petrol powertrain in the top-spec variants while the regular petrol engine gets the choice of a 7-speed DCT automatic.
9) Hyundai Elantra
Price: Rs 15.89 lakh to Rs 20.39 lakh
If SUVs aren’t your type of car and you still prefer a mid-size sedan, consider the facelifted Hyundai Elantra. Launched in October 2019, the Elantra is Hyundai’s top sedan offering in India and it gets a whole new look. It now offers 6 airbags as standard with top-spec features such as front parking sensors, ventilated front seats, dual-zone auto AC, sunroof and the latest 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Blue Link connected car technology.
The 2019 Elantra is powered by a BS6-compliant version of the 2.0-litre petrol engine mated to a 6-speed MT with the choice of 6-speed AT. Hyundai is expected to introduce a BS6 diesel variant in early 2020.
10) Hyundai Kona EV
Price: Rs 23.72 lakh to Rs 23.91 lakh
For the final pick on this list, we have opted for something a bit more future-ready than just BS6 compliance. The Hyundai Kona Electric is the first long-range EV offering in India with an ARAI certified range of 452km. Its 39kWh battery pack can be recharged in around 6 hours using a 7.2kW AC wall-box charger while a 50kW DC fast charger will take just under an hour to charge from 0 to 80 per cent.
This battery powers the 136PS front-mounted electric motor. The Kona Electric comes equipped with six airbags, sunroof, ventilated front seats, auto AC and cruise control as some of its highlight features. The Kona Electric is only available in select cities across India, so it may not be the EV revolution that was promised, but it is the first practical choice in green mobility.
